Renaissance Medical Centre Surfers Paradise provides comprehensive ADHD assessment and ongoing management for children, adolescents and adults with Dr Viknesh Sekhar.
ADHD can affect attention, organisation, time management, emotional regulation, relationships and performance at school, work or home. Because other health conditions can cause similar difficulties, a careful and individual assessment is an important first step.
Dr Vik provides modern, approachable and patient-focused care. He takes the time to understand each patient’s concerns, history and goals before discussing suitable management options.
Attention deficit hyperactivity disorder, commonly known as ADHD, is a neurodevelopmental condition that can affect people throughout their lives. Symptoms often begin during childhood but may not be recognised or diagnosed until adolescence or adulthood.
ADHD can present differently from person to person. Possible experiences include:
Having some of these difficulties does not necessarily mean a person has ADHD. Sleep problems, learning difficulties, anxiety, depression, trauma, medication effects and physical health conditions can produce similar symptoms. A comprehensive clinical assessment considers these possibilities.
An ADHD assessment usually takes place over more than one appointment, allowing time for a careful review of symptoms, health and personal history.
During the first appointment, Dr Vik may discuss:
For children and adolescents, the assessment will usually involve a parent or guardian. Information from teachers, schools and other treating professionals may also be helpful.
Patients, parents, guardians or teachers may be asked to complete validated questionnaires.
The second appointment is used to review the available information, clarify any remaining questions and consider whether the diagnostic criteria for ADHD are met.
With appropriate consent, additional information may be requested from a parent, guardian, partner, family member, teacher, school or previous healthcare provider. Pathology tests, physical observations or other investigations may also be recommended when clinically appropriate.
Some patients may require additional appointments or referral to another health professional before the assessment can be completed.
Dr Vik will explain the outcome of the assessment and discuss an individual management plan. Depending on the patient’s circumstances, this may include:
An assessment does not automatically result in an ADHD diagnosis or medication prescription.
Medication may be considered when an ADHD diagnosis has been established and treatment is clinically appropriate.
Before prescribing, Dr Vik will consider the patient’s medical history, mental health, current medications and individual risk factors. Further information, physical observations or investigations may be required.
If medication is commenced, follow-up appointments are needed to assess its effects, monitor for possible side effects and determine whether treatment remains appropriate. Prescribing is always subject to clinical judgment and applicable legal and professional requirements.
For children and adolescents, treatment decisions are made in consultation with a parent or guardian and may involve coordination with the patient’s school and other healthcare professionals.

Please contact the clinic as early as possible if you need to change a booking.
Please bring or provide any relevant information available, such as:
Parents, guardians, teachers or patients may be asked to complete questionnaires before the appointment.
Please do not worry if older records are unavailable. Dr Vik will discuss other possible sources of supporting information.
A referral is not required to make this appointment. Please contact the clinic if you are unsure whether this service is suitable.
Usually not. A careful ADHD assessment generally requires at least two appointments. Additional appointments or information may be needed depending on the patient’s age, medical history and circumstances.
A parent or legal guardian should attend appointments for a child. Please contact the clinic before booking if there are guardianship, consent or family arrangements we need to consider.
Information from a teacher or school can be valuable when assessing a child or adolescent. This will be discussed with the patient and their parent or guardian. Information will only be requested with appropriate consent.
A diagnosis can only be made when the available clinical information supports it. Another condition may better explain the symptoms, or further assessment may be required.
No. Medication is only considered following an individual clinical assessment and when it is safe, appropriate and legally permitted. An ADHD diagnosis does not guarantee that medication will be prescribed.
Please provide copies of the previous assessment and relevant clinical records. Dr Vik will review the documentation and determine whether further assessment or follow-up is required. A previous diagnosis does not automatically guarantee ongoing prescribing.
This depends on the clinical records available, the treatment involved and whether ongoing prescribing is appropriate. Dr Vik may need to complete his own review, request further information or consult another healthcare professional.
ADHD assessment appointments are structured to allow sufficient time for a detailed evaluation. A separate appointment may be required for unrelated health concerns.
Please contact the clinic to ask about telehealth suitability. Some parts of the assessment or medication-management process may require an in-person appointment.
If difficulties with attention, organisation, impulsivity or restlessness are affecting life at school, work or home, an assessment may help clarify what is happening and identify suitable next steps.
