What is ultrasound therapy?

Ultrasound therapy uses high-frequency sound waves, delivered via a handheld transducer, to transmit energy into soft tissues such as muscles, tendons, and ligaments. This form of energy can generate a mild warming effect and mechanical stimulation, which may support circulation and tissue repair. When used correctly, ultrasound therapy can be an adjunct to your rehabilitation plan rather than a standalone solution.

Why do we include therapeutic ultrasound treatment?

Our philosophy is that effective care blends hands-on and device-based approaches. Ultrasound therapy gives us a non-invasive modality to complement our manual therapy, exercise prescription, and loading strategies. By applying ultrasound energy to the tissue, we aim to reduce pain, support soft-tissue recovery, and help you progress toward your functional goals. Clinical literature shows that ultrasound therapy has been employed in managing soft tissue injuries and chronic pain presentations.

Who may benefit?

Ultrasound therapy may be appropriate if you are:

  1. Managing tendon or ligament irritation (e.g., tendinopathy, sprain/strain)
  2. Working on muscle recovery after exercise or injury
  3. Experiencing soft-tissue restrictions following surgery or trauma
  4. Looking to complement your physical therapy or sports rehabilitation plan

Conversely, ultrasound treatment may not be appropriate if you have open wounds, active infection in the target area, malignancy, a pacemaker/implant in the treated region, or are pregnant (without specialist advice).

How it works in our clinic

When you attend a session, your physiotherapist will first assess your region of concern, review your medical history, and clarify goals. After preparing the skin (cleaning and applying coupling gel), the ultrasound head is moved slowly over the tissue in circular or sweeping motions. The selected programme (frequency, intensity, duty cycle) is determined according to tissue depth and condition.

Typically, you’ll feel the gel and the movement of the head, but the treatment should be comfortable throughout. Each session might last from five to ten minutes, depending on the size and nature of the treatment area.

What therapeutic ultrasound treatment aims to achieve

Pain modulation

By increasing circulation and promoting local tissue response, ultrasound therapy may help reduce discomfort.

Soft‐tissue health

The sound waves may encourage better nutrient delivery and may support cells within tendon/ligament structures to recover more effectively.

Mobility support

  • With tissue responding more favourably, you could find it easier to regain movement, reduce stiffness, and engage in your prescribed strengthening or mobility work.

How do we integrate it with your program?

Therapeutic ultrasound is a tool, not a cure in isolation. At our clinic, we pair it with:

  1. Exercise prescription to load and strengthen the repaired tissue
  2. Manual therapy and soft tissue techniques
  3. Movement retraining and functional rehabilitation
  4. Education on gradual progression and tissue management

This integrated approach ensures that ultrasound therapy supports the overall pathway toward recovery rather than acting on its own.

What you can expect after treatment

After a session, you may feel warmed or mildly relaxed in the treated area. Some swelling or redness is uncommon but should settle quickly. Your physiotherapist will guide you on what to do next, which often includes active movement, loading tasks, and home advice. You can typically resume normal activities unless otherwise instructed.

Why choose our clinic

Our facility is equipped with modern therapeutic ultrasound units, and our physiotherapists are trained in safe and effective delivery of ultrasound therapy. We tailor each treatment to your condition, recovery stage, and personal goals. At every step, we prioritise quality of care, clarity, and achieving your best possible outcome.

Frequently Asked Questions

Ultrasound therapy may be used in the management of soft tissue injuries such as tendon and ligament strains, muscle injuries, bursitis, and some joint conditions.

When applied by a trained clinician and with appropriate settings, ultrasound therapy is considered safe. Caution is required around certain areas (e.g., implants, pregnancy, active infections), so assessment is essential.

It should not cause pain; you may feel slight warmth or the gel on the skin. If you experience discomfort, your therapist should adjust or stop the treatment.

The number of sessions depends on your condition, how you respond to treatment, and your rehabilitation goals. It may be used alongside other therapies over several visits.

Some people notice improved comfort or mobility after one or two treatments; for others, it may take longer, depending on the tissue injury and rehabilitation plan.

Ultrasound therapy is best used as part of a broader rehabilitation program, including movement training, strengthening, and manual therapy. It supports the process rather than replacing it.
